The owners of this large Victorian country house were looking to update their lounge, conservatory and downstairs cloakroom in time for a Christmas drinks party. The 20ft square lounge featured a neo-classical fireplace that had been put in after the house was built and wasn’t strictly in adherence to the Victorian style. Either side of the fireplace were small cupboards and shelves which the owner wanted to revamp and make room for a drinks cabinet and space for a large plasma tv. Our designer planned two new large sets of cupboards to fill the entire space with lattice doors in a gothic arch shape. They were built from MDF and then painted with Farrow and Ball Strong White which gave them a light French look to complement the mock Adam fireplace and yet echoed the Victorian gothic arched doors below. Radiator covers were bespokely made in a matching style. The wallpaper used was Summer Palace by Laura Ashley in Duck Egg blue to give the room a light summery garden mood. The large French doors leading to the garden were draped with interlined hand-made silk with simple tie backs. The floor was sanded and new light fittings (including lights in the cupboards and glass shelves) helped to transform this room into a functional beautiful space.
The drafty cold, conservatory had all the old pipework removed and a new radiator installed with bespoke covers and shelving fitted then beautifully painted to open up the space. The original Victorian floor tiles were polished to make the room warm and sparkling.
This tiny, high-ceiling wc was given large mirrors to give an illusion of space. Above the mirrors was painted black to reduce the height of the ceiling and complement the black and white theme set by the original floor tiles. Large white Venetian blinds were fitted for privacy and a black glass chandelier to add a touch of glamour. The old suite was kept and new chrome fittings added to make it sparkle as new.
The owners of this property were over the moon with their new rooms and have asked us back to do further works. |
